The return authorisation must be requested in person by the foreign national before the body competent to process it, corresponding to the province where the locality in which they are registered is located, except in the case of minors or incapacitated persons, in which case their legal representative may submit the application.
This document is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. It is a personal document that allows return to the country and must be kept until its validity expires.
Therefore, only foreign citizens who are renewing their residence or stay authorisation and plan to travel by plane, and those who have carried out the procedures to issue their first identity card — regardless of the means of transport in which they will travel — need to obtain a return authorisation.

La autorización de regreso, deberá ser solicitada personalmente por el extranjero ante el órgano competente para su tramitación, correspondiente a la provincia donde se encuentre la localidad en la que esté empadronado, salvo en el caso de menores o incapaces, en el que podrá presentar la solicitud su representante legal. La validez de este documento es de 90 días desde la fecha de expedición. Es un documento personal que permite su regreso al país, debiendo conservarse hasta la caducidad de su validez. Por tanto, sólo precisarán obtener una autorización de regreso aquellos ciudadanos extranjeros que tengan en trámite la renovación de su autorización de residencia o de estancia y que tengan previsto viajar en avión y aquellos que hayan realizado los trámites de expedición de su primera tarjeta de identidad, con independencia del medio de transporte en el que vayan a viajar.
