Exchanging a foreign driving licence: how to get the DGT appointment

Exchanging a foreign driving licence for a Spanish one is done at the Traffic office and always needs an appointment (even people over 65 cannot do it without one). EU/EEA, Andorra, Korea, Japan, Monaco and Switzerland licences are exchanged directly; treaty-country licences start online and finish in person once the office calls you in.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive in Spain with my foreign licence while I wait?

EU/EEA licences are valid in Spain. Third-country licences are usually valid only during the first months of residence; check the DGT's official exchange page for your country.

Can the exchange be done without an appointment?

No. Treaty-country exchanges require verifying the licence with the issuing country and always need an appointment.
